This landlocked rural country retains a relaxed pace of life. The former capital of Luang Prabang, recently declared a World Heritage site, is populated with thatched “wats” (temples) and 19th-century French townhouses. Laos is the last secret of Southeast Asia, but it is unlikely to remain unchanged for long.

WHEN TO GO: A single rainy season extends from May-October. The rest of the year is generally dry and sunny. Temperatures are high year-round.
