Hacienda AltaGracia Reinvented

This month sees the reopening of Hacienda AltaGracia in central Costa Rica, after a comprehensive upgrade and refurbishment. Set on a 150-acre highland estate and surrounded by rainforest, the 50-casita property is now part of the distinguished Auberge Resorts Collection. Recent additions include the Well, a spectacular 20,000-square-foot wellness retreat, which offers a combination of Eastern and Western therapies. All treatments begin with a purifying ritual at the Casa de Agua, which includes an herbal exfoliation and local clay application. The signature Well River Bath takes place in the Calientillo River, where guests are suspended on a submerged bed.

A massage with wild bergamot is followed by an herbal soak. Therapies are augmented by a heated tepidarium, vitality and heated jet pools and an aromatherapy steam room. Yoga, meditation and qigong classes are held daily. The resort’s new gastronomic restaurant, Grano, serves a menu of innovative dishes informed by Costa Rican and Latin American culinary traditions and styles, with many ingredients coming from the chef’s on-site kitchen garden. Other highlights of the resort include Los Establos, the property’s exceptional stables, from where guests can ride into the Talamanca mountains on indigenous Costa Rican horses.
