Brno is the second-largest city in the Czech Republic and just a three-hour train ride from Prague. With much of it pedestrianized, it proved a charming place to explore. We discovered a centrally located hotel there that offered a sense of place along with grand views.
Housed in a former bank building, this 73-room property faces the Cabbage Market, one of Brno’s oldest and grandest squares. Inside, it has a striking Secessionist-style décor, influenced by early 20th-century Vienna. A Klimt-inspired mosaic decorates the wall above the front desk in the atrium lobby, and carpeting and fabrics throughout the hotel draw inspiration from his work. Don’t reserve anything less (or more) than a Junior Suite with a square view. Request number 412, which has a corner balcony, dinette and black-leather sofa, as well as a limestone-tiled bath with dual vanities and a shower-tub combination. In addition to a small spa with a private mosaic-tiled Jacuzzi room and treatment rooms in the former bank vault, there is a Viennese-style café and a striking restaurant.
From the editor: “The Grandezza is not a true luxury hotel, but it is a comfortable and atmospheric base from which to explore Brno, a charming small city.”
