Sweden has surprisingly few luxury hideaways of the type found in other European countries, most notably in France and Italy, but Hideaway Report editors uncovered two new hotels to recommend on their recent visit. Copenhagen has long lacked a hotel of distinction, but the deficiency has now been remedied. Here are the newly recommended hotels in Sweden and Copenhagen from the October 2018 Hideaway Report.
This stylish 81-room hotel is located on a peaceful island at the heart of Stockholm, occupying two late-17th-century structures that once housed Swedish Navy officers. The exterior of the hotel may be historic, but the interior is chiefly minimalist and contemporary, with stripped wooden floors and modern Swedish furniture.
From the editor: “Despite the minimalist contemporary design, I felt immediately at home. The only sounds were those of children playing happily somewhere in the distance.”

Chic, modern 53-room boutique hotel, with exceptionally obliging staff, Upper House occupies floors 18 through 25 of a tower opposite the city’s famous Liseberg amusement park. Downtown is a 30-minute walk or a brief taxi ride away. Striking open-plan public areas feature contemporary minimalist Swedish design. Deluxe Suites afford sensational panoramic views, modern furnishings, a subdued palette and spacious baths.
From the editor: “The staff created an extremely favorable impression that did not dissipate during my three-night stay.”

This subtly luxurious 54-room boutique property, located in the heart of Copenhagen, occupies converted townhouses on a street adjacent to The Royal Danish Theater. Owned by ballet dancer Alexander Kølpin, the hotel reflects its founder’s travels around the world. Rooms range from intimate to expansive.
From the editor: “At the end of a two-night stay, I could find almost nothing to dislike about the Hotel Sanders. If you are in search of a peaceful, hospitable and distinctive hideaway in an ideal location, then I suspect that you will like it very much.”
