Madrid is undergoing a hotel and restaurant boom. Hotel Ritz Madrid will reopen as a Mandarin Oriental property next year, and a Four Seasons is slated to open in 2019. On our editor’s recent trip, he discovered two delightful small properties that he could easily recommend.
Gran Hotel Inglés
This newly renovated 48-room hotel is located in the Barrio de las Letras neighborhood, where many of Spain’s most famous writers and thinkers have called home. With new interiors overseen by New York’s Rockwell Group, the hotel effortlessly blends a deep sense of tradition with subtle modern accents. Having been open since 1886, the hotel’s rich history is preserved with a stunning, expansive lobby featuring antique cast-iron pillars. Chic LOBO 8 restaurant serves contemporary Spanish dishes.
From the editor: “We immediately fell in love with this history-steeped property. Unlike most hotel lobbies, this one is a place where you might actually choose to spend some time. ”

This hotel is ideally located at the edge of the bustling Chueca district, which reminds one of hip enclaves in New York and Los Angeles. Open since 2015, the 76-rooms occupy a handsome 1920s building just off the Gran Via. The lobby is located on the sixth floor and features chic design choices. The excellent restaurant serves innovative Spanish dishes prepared by two-star chef Ramón Freixa. Glamorous bar features panoramic view of the Madrid skyline.
From the editor: “The hotel is popular with Madrid’s fashion and showbiz crowds, who come for drinks in its rooftop terrace bar and dinner at its excellent restaurant, Ático.”
