One of the many things that distinguish Uman Lodge in Patagonia is the music that plays during meals in the dining room and on a clifftop deck overlooking the Futaleufú and Espolón rivers. Staff members have assembled several playlists that include soulful South American music, both modern and traditional, by artists like Gustavo Cerati, Mercedes Sosa and José Larralde.
The soundtracks were so superb in that setting that I asked two young women who work at Uman — Emilia and Melina — to share a handful of favorite songs that to them evoke Patagonia. They happily complied, and what follows is a collection of those songs, as well as a handful of others we selected together one evening. I listen to it almost every day, and the music never fails to take me right back there.
