Rosewood Little Dix Bay

British Virgin Islands

Little Dix Bay, British Virgin Islands
Little Dix Bay, British Virgin Islands - Ken Hayden

Little Dix Bay was an eco-resort before “eco-resort” was a word. Opened in 1964 by Laurance Rockefeller, it quickly became a destination unto itself in the British Virgin Islands. It’s no wonder that the resort has been getting lots of attention this year. It was long popular with Andrew Harper members, but it suffered damage from Hurricane Irma in 2017. After undergoing a years-long renovation by New York design firm Meyer Davis, it is now back and better than ever. Set on 500 verdant acres, the resort has stayed true to its original vision. The iconic Pavilion, with its conical roofline, is still at the center of the property, all 80 accommodations have unobstructed views of the water, and the emphasis is on wellness and being one with nature. Guests can swim or snorkel in the nearby Baths of Virgin Gorda, island hop amid the white-sand beaches and turquoise waters, or relax at one of the resort’s seven secluded beaches.

• Complimentary full breakfast for two daily

Longtime member favorite Post Ranch Inn offers stupendous views from its perch high above the Pacific in Big Sur, 45 minutes south of Carmel. Such is the popularity of this resort that it topped our Members’ Choice list for years, and our editors agree: They give it a rare rating of 99. The 39 guest lodgings and one private home offer a range of expansive accommodations: Cliff House, a freestanding structure that seems suspended from the cliffside; circular two-story Pacific Suites with stainless steel outdoor hot tubs; Ocean Houses, complete with double-sided fireplaces; and Coast Houses, with private terraces. Outdoor activities include yoga, meditation, tai chi, whale watching, hiking and nature walks. The falconry program is a new feature that allows guests to get up close and personal with several raptors. Guests under 18 and pets are not permitted.

San Ysidro Ranch

California

Set on a 500-acre estate in the foothills of Los Padres National Forest, just 6 miles northeast of Santa Barbara, this legendary retreat has played host to the likes of Winston Churchill, Audrey Hepburn and John and Jacqueline Kennedy. We love it, too. We recently included the property in our list of “20 Hideaways We’re Dreaming Of.” Overlooking the Pacific Ocean and the Channel Islands, the 41 cottages are surrounded by lavender, roses, jasmine and citrus groves. After parts of the resort were damaged by a mudslide in 2018, it was thoroughly restored. Vines and mature trees were replanted, the décor and baths were updated, and a new 12,000-bottle wine cellar was added. Among the amenities are a heated outdoor hillside pool, more than 17 miles of hiking trails, a fitness studio and a Valmont spa. Kids under 10 get a complimentary Beanie Baby, and the Privileged Pet Program pampers your four-legged friend with plush bedding, a water bowl and a pet-friendly menu.

• Complimentary continental breakfast for two daily

Triple Creek Ranch

Montana

Luxury home at Triple Creek Ranch in Darby, Montana - Pam Voth

Triple Creek Ranch, located in Montana’s Bitterroot Valley, is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream and a longtime Harper recommendation. It’s the perfect antidote to the stresses of city life, which makes Triple Creek especially appealing at present. Imagine daylong cattle drives and poolside barbecues, horseback riding and fly-fishing excursions — and that’s just in the summer. Winter activities include cross-country skiing, dog sledding, snowmobiling and “skijoring,” where a horseback rider pulls a skier. After a day of adventure, guests can enjoy the heated outdoor swimming pool, hot tub and dry sauna. Or they can retreat to one of the 25 log cabins, which overlook a creek and fir forest, and cuddle up next to the woodburning fireplace. Triple Creek Ranch does not allow pets or children under 16.

Harper Member Benefits:
• $100 resort credit
• Complimentary full à-la-carte breakfast for two daily served in the dining room or room service
• Early check-in and late check-out upon availability

Twin Farms

Vermont

Farmhouse at Twin Farms, Barnard, Vermont
Farmhouse at Twin Farms, Barnard, Vermont - Twin Farms

Amid 300 acres of meadows and woodlands in rural Vermont sits Twin Farms, an intimate country retreat an hour-and-a-half drive from Burlington. But this is no run-of-the-mill New England luxury hotel; in 2017, our editors named it one of their “20 Favorite Hideaway Hotels” in the world. The former home of Sinclair Lewis and his wife, Dorothy, this idyllic escape offers 20 lodgings centered on a farmhouse that was built in 1795. All meals, wine and spirits are included in your stay, and there are plenty of activities, including everything from bee tours and bicycling to picnicking and puzzling. One feature we especially like is its liberal dog policy: You can bring up to two 100-pound pups, so your whole family can vacation together.

Harper Member Benefits:

• Complimentary full breakfast for two daily

Blackberry Farm/Blackberry Mountain

Tennessee

This premier culinary destination is tucked into the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains on 4,200 pastoral acres. The country house hotel offers 68 accommodations scattered across the property, in both the Main House and individual cottages. Guests have their choice of spending time at the pool and the spa, or going fly-fishing, clay shooting, horseback riding or hiking. But the pleasures of the table are the primary attraction of Blackberry Farm. Unfortunately, this property is no secret. Our travel advisors tell us that they’re having trouble finding space between now and the end of November!

The farm’s sister property, Blackberry Mountain, opened in 2018 and bills itself as “your own private national park.” And indeed it lives up to that description. Set on 5,200 acres, it is primarily a wellness retreat that offers an array of well-organized activities, including trail running, hiking, fitness classes and art classes like pottery, basket weaving and painting. Last fall, our editor-in-chief visited Blackberry Mountain and called it “a virtually flawless hideaway” that had a program of activities that was more comprehensive and well-organized than he’d ever seen. In fact, our editor-in-chief enjoyed his stay so much, he named Blackberry Mountain our Hideaway of the Year this past January.

Harper Member Benefits:
• $100 spa credit per room
• Complimentary full breakfast for two daily
• Pimento cheese and lavosh at Blackberry Farm
• Yeti container at Blackberry Mountain
• Early check-in and late check-out upon availability
• Upgrade at time of check-in, subject to availability
• Complimentary Wi-Fi
