The dual island nation of St. Kitts and Nevis lies 15 minutes by air west of Antigua. St. Kitts holds a central place in the colonial history of the Caribbean, the British having made their first settlement here in 1624. Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is the largest fortress ever built in the Eastern Caribbean. The two principal attractions of neighboring Nevis are tranquility and natural beauty. The island has few restaurants and nothing in the way of shopping or nightlife, and its beaches are unremarkable. Alexander Hamilton was born on Nevis in either 1755 or 1757 and moved to New Jersey to pursue his education in 1772.
