Situated on the Rhine River, Cologne is Germany’s fourth-largest city, after Berlin, Hamburg and Munich. Following the devastation of World War II, it has been completely rebuilt. The twin spires of Cologne’s huge 13th-century cathedral are said to have survived because Allied aircrews found them so useful for navigation. Today, Cologne is a major cultural center and is home to numerous museums, including the famous Romano-Germanic Museum. The city’s orchestras include the Gürzenich Orchestra and Musica Antiqua Köln. And an annual literary festival reveres the memory of the city’s most famous writer, Heinrich Böll, winner of the 1972 Nobel Prize in Literature. Cologne is well-known for its Kölsch beer and the distinctive fragrance Eau de Cologne (Kölnisch Wasser).
