The charming city of Maastricht is bisected by the Meuse River and is close to both the Belgian and German borders. The city’s strategic location has resulted in an impressive array of fortifications, but these days Maastricht is known as a center of tradition, history and culture. In 1992, the Maastricht Treaty was negotiated and signed here, causing the creation of the European Union. The renowned European Fine Art Fair is held every March.
