A network of small sightseeing trains allows visitors to fully appreciate the grandeur of this famous mountain region. A circular tour by rail can be accomplished in a full day with an early-morning departure from Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen and Wengen; follow this with lunch on the crest of the Jungfrau massif and a late-afternoon return to Interlaken by way of Grindelwald. The line up to one of the world’s highest railroad stations (11,350 feet) actually tunnels through the massive Eiger in the final stages of its precipitous ascent, the cog train pausing at various “picture window” openings chiseled into the famous north face.
