Lake Geneva, or Lac Léman, is the largest natural freshwater lake in western Europe. Sixty percent of it comes under the jurisdiction of the Swiss cantons of Vaud, Geneva and Valais, and 40 percent falls within the French region of Haute-Savoie. The lake lies on the course of the Rhône, which flows to its egress at Geneva. Located 39 miles northeast of Geneva, Lausanne is situated on the lakeshore between the winegrowing regions of Lavaux and La Côte, facing Evian-les-Bains in France. The city offers dramatic panoramic views of the Alps and has a rich musical life, the latter thanks to the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne and L’Ensemble Vocal de Lausanne. L’Ensemble is renowned for recordings of baroque and Renaissance music. In January, the Prix de Lausanne, a famous dance competition, takes place at the Théâtre de Beaulieu.
