Many visitors spend all of their time on the coast, but our favorite Belize itineraries include time both by the sea and in the jungle. From The Lodge at Chaa Creek, one of our recommended hideaways near San Ignacio, it’s possible to explore spectacular Maya cities such as Xunantunich and Caracol, as well as Yaxha and Tikal in Guatemala, which rank among the most compelling ruins in the world. And the Copal Tree Lodge also stands near some intriguing and little-known Maya sites, including Nim Li Punit and Lubaantun. Atrocious dirt roads often require four-wheel-drive vehicles even in the dry season (generally January to June). As a result, the best way to travel is by light aircraft.
