Five stylish lodges (a total of 76 suites) spread across carefully chosen valley locations a few hours’ drive apart are known collectively as “Amankora” (the Bhutanese word “kora” means “circular pilgrimage”). Designed by famed architect Kerry Hill, all display a refined synthesis of tradition and modernity, with expanses of natural wood and stone that create a serene and elegant design aesthetic. Note that access to the internet is limited. Menus feature Bhutanese, Indian and Continental cuisine prepared with homegrown produce. At all five lodges, the principal amenity is a small health spa for Himalayan plant- and herb-based therapies. In addition, Paro Lodge is renowned for its herb-infused hot stone baths, Gangtey for its open-air “Potato Shed Dinners” and Bumthang for its on-staff astrologists. Guided treks, whitewater rafting excursions, archery lessons and village tours can be arranged.
