Located 30 minutes south of Avignon, this gourmet sanctuary is surrounded by the ragged cliffs and rock pinnacles of the Alpilles. The 54 lodgings occupy five historic structures, the best being Le Manoir, a deftly restored 15th-century mansion set in a picturesque gorge half a mile from the property’s celebrated two-star restaurant. Guest rooms feature traditional French styling and chic contemporary motifs, most looking out on peaceful formal gardens or an olive grove. Amenities include three swimming pools, a tennis court (reservations should be made in advance) and a full-service spa with a fitness room and a hammam. Memorable meals at the three-star Oustau de Baumanière are served in a charming converted 16th-century farmhouse trimmed by stone arches, carved beams and wrought-iron chandeliers. Cooking courses, oenology classes and complimentary bicycles are all available. The cellars of the property are stocked with 50,000 bottles of wine, and the hotel organizes events at the restaurant with many of the featured winemakers. The retreat also offers a number of packages that highlight the cultural treasures of Provence.
