This romantic retreat in the Indian Ocean occupies a private island about three miles off the northeastern tip of Zanzibar. Tucked into the pines and palms that line the powdery white-sand beach are 12 airy, rustic bungalows built of local timber and handwoven coconut palm matting (two of the lodgings are linked to form a family suite). Furnishings include a huge bed, a writing table, comfortable chairs and sofas. Each suite has its own personal butler, a tree-shaded veranda and a stylish bath with a stone shower connected by way of a palm-covered walkway. Note, the rooms do not include air-conditioning. Thatched dining and bar areas offer excellent cuisine and uninterrupted views of the sea and coral reefs beyond. Outdoor activities include snorkeling, kayaking, fly-fishing and scuba diving with a PADI-certified dive school. In-room massages are also available. The property is closed throughout April and May.
Editor’s Choice: Banda for Two, $3,520 (all meals, house wines and spirits, selected water sports and laundry included).
