The younger sister of Blackberry Farm, this superlative property is a 20-minute drive away on a 5,200-acre estate overlooking Great Smoky Mountains National Park, more than half of which have been set aside for conservation. With a very different personality from its sibling, Blackberry Mountain is a contemporary resort, where the emphasis is on exercise and wellness and the cuisine is health-conscious with influences from around the globe. The main lodge, constructed from rough-hewn blocks of honey-colored stone that have been quarried on the estate, contains the Three Sisters restaurant and the Whippoorwill Lounge, a beautiful cocktail bar. A sublevel houses the spa and a year-round heated pool. A second dining option is the Firetower, which is located at 2,800 feet on the panoramic summit of Chilhowee Mountain. The accommodations comprise 18 stylish Stone Cottages, five multibedroom homes and six Watchman Cabins, the last category located at the top of the mountain, a seven-minute drive from the main lodge. Activities include hiking, climbing, mountain biking and sporting clays. In addition to dedicated spin and Pilates studios, there are creekside meditation classes and aerial yoga sessions in the surrounding forest. Art classes, basket weaving and pottery making, plus fly-fishing, horseback riding, kayaking, biking and hiking excursions, can be arranged.

Just about everything, but especially the silence, the glorious views, the exceptionally comfortable and stylish cottages, the delicious food and the unrivaled program of activities.
Nothing really. The reception staff seemed disorganized and slightly grumpy when we arrived, but everyone else was charming.
Every room has a dedicated buggy; otherwise, to move around the property, guests summon one of the Lexus automobiles that are constantly on call. The resort hosts regular cultural events with performers the caliber of Emmylou Harris.
Lowest Rate: Watchman Cabin, $1,600; Editor’s Choice: Cottage, $1,950 (dinner included; minimum stay required).
