Located in the spectacular town of Matera, this dramatic cave hotel is owned by Swedish-Italian architect Daniele Kihlgren. Common areas include a candlelit reception and the Cripta della Civita, an ancient church now renovated and converted for public use. The 18 unique guest accommodations, each in its own grotto, preserve the authentic rusticity of the experience with minimal furnishings, dim lighting, stone walls, vaulted ceilings and terra-cotta tile floors. In keeping with this ethos, rooms lack TVs or phones; however, Wi-Fi and air-conditioning are provided. The gourmet restaurant serves regional fare; advance reservations are required. The terrace is an exceptionally congenial spot for evening cocktails. Cooking courses and in-room spa treatments can be arranged.
