Hacienda AltaGracia, An Auberge Resort
Scale of 90-100
Perched atop 865 acres of gardens and rainforest, this luxurious mountainside retreat is three and a half hours southeast of San José. The 50 rooms are divided among stylish Deluxe Suites and one- and two-bedroom Casitas, all with A/C, spacious baths, large seating areas and patios, most with sweeping countryside views (avoid 7-10, 25-27 and 30). Dining options include the chic main restaurant Ambar, comprising a panoramic breakfast terrace and an inviting cocktail lounge; El Bistro for casual lunches; and a horse- and gambling-themed bar. A grand 20,000-square-foot spa offers an indoor pool and separate outdoor pools for families and adults. Horseback riding, ziplining, cigar-making, cooking classes and scenic ultralight airplane flight excursions can be arranged.

The plush and spacious accommodations; the always helpful staff; the flawlessly maintained spa; the immaculate stables.
The uneven food; the sterile main bar.
Good to Know
Guests can charter a plane to take them directly to the resort’s airstrip or fly commercial into San Isidro del General, about 15 or 20 minutes from the property; the three-and-a-half-hour drive from San José is quite pretty, winding through green mountains and vast palm plantations.
