The Hermitage Hotel
Scale of 90-100
This beautiful Beaux Arts-style landmark hotel is set in the heart of downtown. Designed by James Carpenter, the majestic interior makes lavish use of Siena-marble and Russian-walnut paneling, and the lobby is covered by a massive stained-glass ceiling. Decorated in a soft palette of olive green and cream, each of the 122 rooms and suites is appointed with traditional furniture in spacious living areas and comes with the expected modern amenities. Marble-clad baths feature deep soaking tubs, separate showers and in-mirror televisions. The clubby Oak Bar makes a fine stop before dinner in the excellent Capitol Grille, where chef Derek Brooks serves delicious contemporary food with a strong Southern accent. Ingredients are sourced from the hotel’s own garden at the Glen Leven Farm, 15 minutes from the hotel. In support of the farm, the hotel has raised more than $880,000 toward land conservation across the state. Amenities include a well-stocked boutique, a spa and a small sunlit exercise room.
