Surrounding a tranquil tiled courtyard, this gourmet retreat is in an ideal location just a few blocks from Ocean Avenue and Carmel beach. A three-story stucco-clad 1929 building with colorful flower boxes and green accents comprises 20 guest accommodations. Decorated by famed designer Helga Horner, lodgings feature canopied beds, dark wood furnishings and travertine-tiled baths. Rooms on the third floor provide glimpses of the ocean. Augmented by a 2,500-bottle wine cellar, the excellent one-star Aubergine restaurant, overseen by chef Justin Cogley, offers daily changing Asian-influenced central-Californian multicourse menus that highlight local seafood (closed Monday and Tuesday). Cooking classes can be arranged. Children under the age of 12 are not permitted in the main dining room. Overall, this is an intimate hideaway that is ideal for couples seeking exceptionally delicious cuisine.
