Housed within a converted mansion that was built in 1506 as the private residence for the Portuguese governor, this charming and intimate hotel is set amid lovely landscaped gardens in Kochi. The eight spacious, air-conditioned and individually decorated guest accommodations have high ceilings with fans, antiques, colonial artwork and period furniture, plus marble-and-mahogany baths with large white-marble step-in showers and louvered shutters. The preferred Viceroy Luxury Suite is augmented by an expansive furnished veranda. The hotel encompasses a well-stocked library, a plunge pool and an excellent restaurant serving Keralan, Indian and Continental fare. A poolside menu offering light-fare options is also available. Though the on-site massage facility is small, the concierge is happy to book spa treatments at a number of sophisticated ayurvedic centers nearby.
Lowest Rate: J. Thomas Luxury Heritage Room, $340; Editor’s Choice: Viceroy Luxury Suite, $500 (breakfast, afternoon tea and three-course lunch or dinner included).
