Lizard Island

Editor Rating
Scale of 90-100

Accessible only by private plane, this glamorous resort is set on a remote 2,500-acre island surrounded by crystalline lagoons. The 40 rooms offer spacious living areas with floor-to-ceiling windows leading onto private terraces. Beachfront Suites feature paths that lead directly to the beach. Perched on a seaside point, The Pavilion has a private deck with a plunge pool. Dining options include Salt Water Restaurant for modern Australian cuisine with Mediterranean and Asian inflections. Driftwood Bar is a good choice for cocktails, and picnic baskets for secluded beach lunches can be arranged in advance. Amenities include a tennis court, a spa, a gym, a freshwater pool and 24 private beaches. Spectacular outer-reef snorkeling and scuba diving are both available, as is black marlin and game fishing (September to December only). Scenic hourlong flights from Cairns to Lizard Island are offered daily. The hotel does not permit children under the age of 10.
