Malibu Beach Inn
Scale of 90-100
A short walk from the Malibu Pier, this 47-room beachfront hotel has recently reinvented itself, refreshing the rooms and public spaces. Premier Ocean Front rooms mix beachy and Danish modern styles, with wood floors, vaulted wood-beamed ceilings, gas fireplaces and balconies with unobstructed views of the beach and pier but have cramped shower-only baths. The Carbon Beach Club Restaurant serves delicious Mediterranean-inflected dinners and rich breakfasts on a sublime terrace jutting toward the sea. On the public beach below it, the hotel services a row of loungers. There is also a spa suite for expensive but highly professional massages. Though well-located for visiting the Getty Villa and hiking in the Santa Monica Mountains, the hotel is primarily a place to simply relax.

The beachfront location; the warm and helpful staff; our airy room and its Pacific-view balcony; the fine restaurant and its sublime waterfront terrace; the umbrella-shaded loungers on the beach; the complimentary wine and macaroons.
Sound from the Pacific Coast Highway penetrated our room, as did other noise in the hallway; our petite bath.
