The Marlborough Lodge

Editor Rating
Scale of 90-100

Built in 1901, this historic former convent with 10 rooms is centered on 16 lavender-strewn manicured acres, complete with vineyards, heritage trees and lily-covered ponds. Premium Suites, many with an octagonal shape and vaulted ceiling, have kept many of their original architectural details, including stained glass, gothic windows and French doors opening onto balconies overlooking the scenic landscape. Period moldings, doors and an intricately carved staircase are fashioned from native New Zealand timbers. These period details serve as a reminder of the history of this now thoroughly updated country house hotel. Amenities include a charming Great Room, an excellent restaurant for seasonal cuisine, grass tennis courts available during the summer and an outdoor pool (heated November-March). The hotel does not permit children under the age of 8.
