Founded in 1965 by Laurance S. Rockefeller, this renowned 252-room resort overlooks a white-sand beach on the Kohala Coast. The Beachfront Wing features a midcentury modern décor with white walls, pale wood floors, splashes of color from upholstery fabrics and cushions, glamorous baths, a comprehensive range of modern technology and private lanais with mesmerizing ocean views. Dining venues include the main restaurant, Manta; Copper Bar, for creative tapas and cocktails; and Hau Tree for casual beachside dining. The hotel offers clambakes every Saturday evening and luaus every Tuesday and Friday. Amenities include an 18-hole Robert Trent Jones Sr. golf course, plus a clubhouse, a seaside tennis club with 11 courts, a 2,500-square-foot fitness center and a spa with five treatment rooms and a salon. The property also offers a beach club with surfing lessons and canoe rentals, a kids’ program and helicopter tours of the island.
