Mauna Lani

Editor Rating
Scale of 90-100

This dramatic resort-estate sports a beachfront setting on the Kohala coast. The 333 rooms and suites feature private lanais and stylish furnishings and occupy six-story wings centered on an atrium lobby of towering palms, waterfalls and ornamental fishponds. The five bungalows are augmented by private beach access, pools, Jacuzzis and gated driveways. The property offers three open-air restaurants, including the popular oceanfront CanoeHouse for island-inspired cuisine made with locally sourced ingredients. The resort’s two seaside golf courses and six-court tennis garden are ranked among Hawaii’s best. The property also encompasses an adults-only infinity pool, a palm-shaded beach with a shallow swimming lagoon, a spa, a kids’ club and the Surf Shack, the resort’s sports activity center. Cultural workshops, including ukelele lessons, hula, lei making and coconut frond weaving classes, and interactive history sessions led by the resort's Living Culture Practitioner, are especially memorable. Excursions to a nearby turtle sanctuary can also be arranged.
