This sophisticated 93-room hotel, spanning more than three blocks in a series of structures in the small town of Highlands, is located close to the point where North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia converge. Originally built in the 1870s as a boardinghouse, the main manor, with a brick-and-stone façade, encompasses the first-rate restaurant Madison’s, the Historic Inn rooms and suites and an atmospheric cocktail lounge that offers live music on weekends. The recommended adults-only Spa Suites feature a more contemporary design, and come with fireplaces, four-poster beds and private balconies. The Hickory Cottage complex has a large pool and Jacuzzi set beside an expansive fitness center offering a comprehensive schedule of wellness classes. Other amenities include a Tom Jackson-designed golf course flanked by a clubhouse with a grill restaurant, tennis courts and a spa.
