San Ysidro Ranch
Scale of 90-100
This sophisticated 500-acre cottage-style resort in the leafy foothills of Montecito, just outside Santa Barbara, has reopened. Devastating damages caused by mudslides in 2018 required a comprehensive rehabilitation and refurbishment of the entire property that lasted 15 months. Newly landscaped grounds contain 41 handsome lodgings in peaked-roof cottages, many with generous sitting areas, baths with radiant-heat floors, working fireplaces or stoves, polished oak floors and private patios; some have hot tubs and outdoor rainfall showers. Creekside cottages are very special, along with premium cottages such as the Kennedy and romantic Gardenia. Dining venues, including the Stonehouse restaurant and Plow & Angel bistro, both overseen by chef Matt Johnson, have been redesigned, and the large underground wine cellar has been rebuilt and restocked to house 12,000 premium wines and Champagnes from around the world. Among the amenities are a heated outdoor hillside pool, more than 17 miles of hiking trails, a fitness studio and a Valmont spa.
