Set on a fortified promontory at a scenic bend of the Danube River, this stately 17th-century castle hotel owned by the Thiery family is 75 minutes west of Vienna. The 47 guest quarters (limited A/C) are appointed in Baroque/Biedermeier/Empire styles, with the lavish salons having carved ceilings, Persian carpets and stylish groupings of period furniture. A two-minute walk from the main building, the recommended Villa Schönthal has two bedrooms, a spacious great room and a splendid private Danube-view garden. The property encompasses a vaulted restaurant serving local traditional and international selections, and a spectacular shaded dining terrace with sweeping river views. Nestled within a park beside a pond a five-minute walk from the main property, Küffer Keller is the hotel’s grill-focused casual dining option (open from May-October). Other amenities include a small fitness room, an infrared sauna and indoor and outdoor swimming pools. A number of beautiful hiking and biking paths are within easy reach, and horseback riding, kayaking, riverboat excursions and wine tastings at nearby vineyards can be arranged. The property is closed November through March.
