Conveniently located near the center of George Town, this distinctive hotel on a small lane is comprised of seven restored 19th-century shophouses. Public areas include a large tile-floored central atrium ornamented with sweet-smelling frangipani trees in huge glazed pots and a lounge-bar featuring slatted wooden screens, cast-iron lacework and a spectacular collection of local antiques, including figurines, lacquered tiffin carriers and teak couches inlaid with mother-of-pearl. The ground floor includes Kebaya, serving a menu of classic Indo- and Straits Chinese dishes, plus a bar, a beautifully furnished library and a small lap pool. The 18 two-story suites include four-poster carved beds and spacious lounges furnished with red velvet-upholstered sofas, Chinese antiques and colonial-style furniture of British, Sri Lankan and local provenance. The most desirable are the spacious duplex Argus Apartments, which overlook a quiet backstreet. Guided tours, cooking classes and in-room massage treatments can be arranged.
