Part of the Sun Valley Resort, this family-friendly lodge was originally opened in 1936 as America’s first destination ski resort. Of the 108 spacious, contemporary rooms, request a Lodge Terrace or Celebrity Suite on the third or fourth floor for the best views. The open reception area overlooks an ice skating rink (open year-round) and is decorated with black-and-white celebrity photographs and ski champion memorabilia. Dining options are highlighted by charming Austrian-inspired Konditorei café and the adjacent Gretchen’s for excellent seasonal American cuisine. Also recommended is Sun Valley’s original restaurant, The Ram, a steakhouse dating from 1937. Amenities include a circular glass-enclosed pool, a hot tub, two fitness centers, a yoga studio, a 20,000-square-foot spa, an opera house converted into a 340-seat movie theater and a bowling alley. Golf, horseback riding, fishing, tennis and world-class skiing are also available.
