Vermejo Park Ranch

96 Editor Rating*
Scale of 90-100

Luxurious 585,000-acre ranch, with a large herd of resident bison, owned by media mogul Ted Turner. Though primarily a shooting and fishing destination, family-friendly activities include horseback riding, wildlife safari tours and guided hikes. The best of the 24 lodgings are in the historic stone-faced Casa Grande mansion, which includes several sitting areas and sunrooms, a plant-filled atrium, a billiards room and an imposing living room with a grand piano, Victorian furnishings and a domed coffered ceiling. Also remote eight-bedroom Costilla Lodge, located at an elevation of 10,200 feet. Avoid rooms in Casa Minor. Atmospheric dining room serving a daily changing menu. Exceptional guides.
