Gracious ryokan in a 160-year-old traditional building with a thatched roof and earthen walls tucked in a large, lush garden a 20-minute drive from Takayama’s train station. Atmospheric main lounge features hardwood floors, exposed wood beams, an open hearth and low-set furniture. Eight tatami mat-floored rooms include sitting areas, large baths with cedar-wood soaking tubs and picturesque river and forest views; no Western-style beds available. A main dining room serves delicious regional delicacies including Hida beef and seasonal sansai (mountain vegetables), plus local sake. Complimentary shuttle service is offered to the famous Hida no Sato folk village and nearby sake distilleries.
