The Willows Historic Palm Springs Inn
This charming 17-room inn at the foot of the San Jacinto Mountains recaptures the casually elegant ambiance of Palm Springs in its 1930s heyday. Mahogany-beamed ceilings and natural-stone fireplaces accent individually decorated rooms. Clark Gable and Carole Lombard honeymooned in the Library Room, which holds an ornately carved antique writing desk, a fireplace and a coffered ceiling. The room’s original bath includes a reglazed vintage tub. A hearty breakfast and an afternoon wine reception are offered and a pool and hot tub are available, but the property lacks an on-site restaurant, spa and gym. Those willing to forgo these amenities in exchange for an atmosphere of gracious tranquility will find no equal in Palm Springs. The hotel is closed June through August.

In the stark shadows of a Palm Springs hillside footed with ancient desert willows, William Mead found a winter refuge.
Large, comfortable resorts fill the spaces between the fairways in Palm Springs, but none could be considered a luxury hideaway. My favorite property in the city remains The Willows.
My favorite property in Palm Springs remains The Willows, an eight-room mansion built in 1925 into the side of a mountain, a five-minute walk from the heart of downtown.
It takes only about an hour to reach the northwest entrance of the immense (1,234 square miles) Joshua Tree National Park from The Willows, and the trip is well worth the effort.
